Discover Dolgarrog, its history and natural history

Dolgarrog is a small village situated on the western side of the Conwy Valley a few miles north of Trefriw.

2025 marks the 100^th Anniversary of the Dolgarrog Dam disaster when one of the then newly built dams above the village, created to provide water for the village’s Aluminium works, burst and claimed the lives of sixteen of its residents.
This walk will start at the memorial gardens established in memory of the disaster, then will climb steeply on old trackways through the ancient woodland of Coed Dolgarrog National Nature Reserve up to Llyn Coedty.
A landscape rich in cuckoos, ghost woods and Celtic Rainforest. From there we’ll follow an old trackway over towards Llyn Cowlyd with glorious views of the Conwy valley and the Carneddau mountains then descend back to the village. On our way we’ll explore the rich human and natural history of the area visiting once-famous waterfalls, deserted settlements now reclaimed by woodland, and evidence of the area’s industrial past and present.

Duration:  All day.  Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance: About 6 miles / 10 km

Grade:  Moderate: Steep uneven paths for both ascent and descent otherwise good paths. The climb up out of the Conwy Valley is about 300m

Early Bird Sunday

Enjoy the dawn chorus on an early morning walk in the countryside near Trefriw with some local bird watchers.
While walking a loop that includes woodland and riverbank, learn how to identify birds by their song.
We will be going at a leisurely pace, though there will be some rough and short steep sections.
The ground may be wet in places. Good boots and binoculars recommended.
There’ll be a hot drink and biscuits waiting for us on our return to the Village Hall, and we’ll be back in sufficient time for you to attend another main walk, if you wish! (except for the Carneddau High walk leaving at 08.15am)

Duration:  A maximum of 3 hours

Grade:  Easy / Moderate:

A meander through the Moelwynion

In a less frequented but still magnificent corner of the national park, we will circumnavigate Moel yr hydd and traverse the most beautiful balcony walk in Eryri. We will wander through old quarry workings, travel past Llyn Cwmorthin and Llyn Stwlan and wonder at the brutalist beauty of Trawsfynydd in the distance.

Duration:  All day.  Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance:  6 Miles / 10 km    

Grade:  Moderate / Strenuous 
There’s no scrambling but you will need a head for heights and might occasionally need to use a hand. It is very boggy, as well as lots of slate paths – please wear suitable boots.

Carneddau High

A Carneddau walk starting near Llanbedr-y-Cennin, high above the Conwy valley.
We’ll be heading up from Bwlch-y-gaer taking a path rising to Drum, Foel-fras and Carnedd Gwenllian above the mysterious Dulyn and Melynllyn reservoirs.
We’ll descend down into Cwm Eigiau beneath the glowering cliffs of Carnedd Llewellyn making our way back over to Llyn Cowlyd, where we’ll be picked-up and ride back to Trefriw.

Duration:  All day.  Please bring a packed lunch and plenty of water and snacks.

Distance:  13 Miles / 20 km  

Grade: Strenuous (High) Mountain  
This walk is remote, in parts boggy, and it can be cold on the tops, even in May.  Please ensure that you have warm, waterproof clothing and good boots. Gaiters would not be out of order in places.

The Huw Tom upland walk

Huw Thomas Edwards was a Welsh politician and trade union leader who started from humble beginnings working in Graiglwyd quarry in Penmaenmawr. He was born in Rowen, in the Conwy valley, and walked the route between the two places each day.

The Huw Tom Upland Walk is an iconic linear walk through time, sprinkled with historical remnants and relics. The route also offers spectacular views of the Conwy Valley, the Great Orme and across the coast and Liverpool Bay.

We’ll be taking our minibus out to the Penmaenmawr Museum, then walking over the tops and down to the Ty Gwyn pub in Rowen for a panad or pint.  We will then travel back in the minibus to Trefriw.

Duration:  All day.  Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance:  6 miles  / 10 km

Grade:  Moderate, with some steeper sections and some rougher ground.

Heading Home

A gem of a walk, along a high level route back to Trefriw from Betws y coed .

From Trefriw we’ll be walking firstly down towards the river Conwy, and crossing on the suspension bridge to reach the newly renamed North Llanrwst and Trefriw railway station, where we’ll catch the Conwy Valley line train to Betws y coed. From there we’ll be walking back to Trefriw on good tracks through parts of the Gwydir Forest, passing several beautiful lakes and viewpoints.

We’ll initially head up through the Aberllyn gorge and along the shore of Llyn Parc, then down to old Hafna Mine, which is exactly half way, and is where we’ll stop for lunch. The walk then takes us over the highest part of the Gwydir Forest, past some gorgeous lakes with great views over towards the mountains, before descending to Trefriw past the ancient church at Llanrhychwyn.

Duration:  All day.  Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance: 8 miles / 12 km

Grade:  Moderate, with a couple of steep sections

Refreshing Riverside Ramble

On this scenic walk – through meadows and forest paths – which follows the Betws to Capel Curig section of the Snowdonia Slate Trail, we’ll initially never be far from the river Llugwy, and its numerous falls, including the famous Swallow Falls. As we approach the end of the walk we’ll get great views over the mountains.

The walk will end at Plas y Brenin at Capel Curig, where we can have a panad or a pint while waiting for our minibus back to Trefriw.

Duration:  All day.  Please bring a packed lunch.

Grade:  Easy / moderate
