Hot Rocks and Megaliths – 2020

Hot Rocks and Megaliths

This is a traverse across deep time on the northern edge of the National Park.  We’ll be travelling by minibus to Bwlch y Ddeufaen, in the Carneddau foothills above Rowen, then walking on good track, open moorland and 1/4 bog-crossing (no snorkelling!).  Walking poles and waterproof boots a must!

We’ll return on the minibus, and be back in time for our now-legendary Cake Fest at 4 p.m.!

Please remember that it can be cold in the foothils of the Carneddau mountains, even in May, so make sure you’ve got warm, waterproof clothing, and good footwear.

Duration:  All day.  Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance:  About 6 miles / 10 km

Grade:  Moderate, but leisurely

Meet:  9:00 a.m. at Trefriw Village Hall (LL27 0JH, SH781631)
Tea and cake will be available in the Hall both before and after your walk.

If Carlsberg did good views … – 2020

Sunday 17th May, 2020

If Carlsberg did good views …

Crimpiau (pronounced locally ‘Crimp – ee – a’, and meaning hard sharp edge; ridge, spur; ledge) is located between Capel Curig and Llyn Crafnant and is a stunning viewpoint despite being only 475m / 1558′ high. Photographer Nick Livesey writes in his book ‘Photographing the Snowdonia Mountains’, “Being little more than a minor incident on a long knobbly ridge, lowly Crimpiau harbours a secret that few would suspect from below”.  Nick’s not alone – many articles describe the lowly summit of Crimpiau as one of the best viewpoints in Snowdonia.

We’ll be taking the minibus to Capel Curig, then taking a scenic walk back to Trefriw, making a small steep detour to ascend Crimpiau. And Crimpiau aside, it’s a great walk with lovely views from start to finish.

We’ll be back in time for our now-legendary Cake Fest at 4 p.m.!

Duration:  All day.  Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance:  About 9 miles / 14 km

Grade:  Moderate, but leisurely

Meet:  9:15 a.m. at Trefriw Village Hall (LL27 0JH, SH781631)
Tea and cake will be available in the Hall both before and after your walk.

A Walk in the Lakes – 2020

Sunday 17th May, 2020

A Walk in the Lakes

Join us for the walk that attracts many visitors to Trefriw – the classic round of Llyn Crafnant and Llyn Geirionydd. From Trefriw we ascend past the Fairy Falls and onto the edge of Gwydir Forest. Gwydir Forest was mentioned in written texts at least 500 years ago, and we’ll certainly witness some of its history, passing old mine works, the infamous Klondyke mill and the monument to the bard, Taliesin.

The views at both lakes are great; Crafnant is justly described as one of the most beautiful lakes in Wales.  After completing our loop of the two lakes we’ll head back to Trefriw, and if the season is kind to us, we’ll take in a vast and stunning field of bluebells as we return to the village.

We’ll be back in time for our now-legendary Cake Fest at 4 p.m.!

Duration:  All day.  Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance:  About 6.5 miles / 10.5 km

Grade:  Moderate, but leisurely

Meet:  9:45 a.m. at Trefriw Village Hall (LL27 0JH, SH781631)
Tea and cake will be available in the Hall both before and after your walk.

The Grey Mare’s Tail – 2020

Sunday 17th May, 2020

The Grey Mare’s Tail

Join us for a local walk from the village, calling in at the Grey Mare’s Tail, a splendid waterfall a couple of miles away. This waterfall also provides water for the fountains at Gwydir Castle, via a leat at the top, and it was Lady Willoughby of Gwydir who gave it its name. We will then head on past Gwydir to the meadows at Llanrwst, returning to Trefriw alongside the river Conwy.

We’ll be back in time for our now-legendary Cake Fest at 4 p.m.!

Duration:  All day.  Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance:  About 6 miles / 9.5 km

Grade:  Moderate, but leisurely

Meet:  10:15 a.m. at Trefriw Village Hall (LL27 0JH, SH781631)

Wildflower Wisdom – 2020

Sunday 17th May, 2020

Wildflower wisdom

Plants have evolved their own ways of combatting danger and disease. Our ancestors learnt how to make use of these attributes long before the discovery of antibiotics. Find out how the plants that grow in the Crafnant valley were essential to previous generations of villagers in their everyday lives. This is an opportunity to discover more about the history of the village as well.

A leisurely walk through the woodlands and meadows famous for bluebells and other spring flowers.  Most of the walk is through fields or on good tracks. (There is one stile.)

We’ll be back in time for our now-legendary Cake Fest at 4 p.m.!

Duration:  Half day, starting late morning .  Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance:  About 4 miles / 6.5 km

Grade:  Easy, and at a leisurely pace

Meet:  11:00 a.m. at Trefriw Village Hall (LL27 0JH, SH781631)
(This will be convenient for anyone arriving by bus to Trefriw.)
Tea and cake will be available in the Hall both before and after your walk.

Snowdon Earlybird – 2019

Friday 17th May, 2019

Snowdon Earlybird

Over the years we’ve met a lot of people who confess they’ve never walked up Snowdon – but really want to!  Well, here’s your opportunity, in the company of a couple of Snowdon Volunteer Wardens who know pretty much everything there is to know about the mountain.  We’ll be leaving fairly early, ascending via the Pyg Track so that we get to the summit before it gets too busy, then our descent will be via the Miners’ Track.

Our minibus will take us to Pen-y-Pass, and bring us back afterwards.

(Note that whilst we are anticipating that the summit cafe and toilets will be open, if there are high winds trains will not run to the summit, so the building will not be open.)

Remember that it can be cold at altitude, even in May.  And wet too. Full water/windproofs, plenty of warm clothing, and good mountain boots (preferably with ankle suport and good tread) are essential.

Duration: All Day.  Please bring a packed lunch and plenty to drink.

Distance: 8 miles / 13 km

Grade: Strenuous high mountain

Suitability:    Fit, experienced walkers. You must be ready for well over 2 hours of continual ascent. This is no walk in the park (well, strictly speaking it is, of course!)

Meet: 8.00 a.m. at Trefriw Village Hall (LL27 0JH, SH781631)
or, if the Village Hall repairs are not completed in time, at Peniel Chapel, LL27 0JL, just a minute’s walk up the road opposite the hall.

Dolgarrog Disaster – 2019

Friday 17th May, 2019

Dolgarrog Disaster

This walk heads out of Trefriw up over Cefn Cyfarwydd, the hill behind the village, to the Cowlyd valley.  A steep walk to begin with, but with some stunning 360° views of Snowdonia and the coast. We will the cross in front of the Cowlyd dam and up over the shoulder of Moel Eilio to remote Cwm Eigiau and Llyn Eigiau and its dam. It was the breaching of this dam which caused the disaster in 1925. We will then follow the course of the floodwaters along the old trackbed of the Eigiau Tramway back to Dolgarrog, passing Coedty reservoir, high above the village, before following the waterfalls down to Dolgarrog and visiting the memorial there. We’ll return to Trefriw on our minibus.

Please remember that it can be cold in the foothils of the Carneddau mountains, even in May, so make sure you’ve got warm, waterproof clothing, and good footwear.

Duration:  All Day. Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance:  about 10.5 miles / 17 km

Grade:  Moderate/Strenuous, with some steeper uphill sections, particularly at the beginning where the first 3/4 mile has some 800ft of ascent.

Meet:  9.00 a.m. at Trefriw Village Hall (LL27 0JH, SH781631)
or, if the Village Hall repairs are not completed in time, at Peniel Chapel, LL27 0JL, just a minute’s walk up the road opposite the hall.

Rocks and Rituals – 2019

Friday 17th May, 2019

Rocks and Rituals

The moorland edge above Rowen preserves  a remarkable complex of ancient monuments.

Standing stones and circles, cromlechi and hillforts, field systems and farms, trackways and a Roman road await discovery on this circa 5 mile-long walk. There will be some moderately steep ascents and descents.

We will travel to and from the start point in our minibus.

This promises to be fascinating, led by the “charismatic and brilliant” Ken Brassil.

Duration:  All day .   Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance:  about 5 miles / 8 km

Grade:  Moderate

Meet:  9.15 a.m. at Trefriw Village Hall (LL27 0JH, SH781631)

River Deep, Mountain High – 2019

Friday 17th May, 2019

River Deep, Mountain High

This walk explores both low and high places; in fact, we ought really to call it ‘Mountain High, River Deep’, as we will be visiting the higher places first. We start by ascending Grinllwm, the hill which directly overlooks Trefriw and offers splendid views down the Conwy valley to the coast. We then complete this wild first section by heading to the hills above Llanrhychwyn, which offer great views over the mountains. The forest section sees us heading to the trig point at one of the highest parts of the Gwydir Forest, then descending to Gwydir. The final part is the leisurely, level walk home beside the river Conwy, almost at sea level (the river is tidal to Tan Lan, between Trefriw and Llanrwst).

Duration:  All Day. Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance:  about 9.5 miles / 15 km

Grade:  Moderate (though a very steep start), and at a leisurely pace

Meet:  9.30 a.m. at Trefriw Village Hall (LL27 0JH, SH781631)
or, if the Village Hall repairs are not completed in time, at Peniel Chapel, LL27 0JL, just a minute’s walk up the road opposite the hall.

Backpack and Paddle – 2019

Friday 17th May, 2019

Backpack and Paddle

A walk with a difference!  We’ll be doing some good walking between Trefriw and Llyn Parc (in the Gwydir Forest), and also an exciting two-hour packrafting session.  Packrafting is where you carry your light raft with you, then inflate it when you get to the water. The two hours includes the walk to the lake from Hafna Mine, so we should have a good hour on the water. Life jackets will be provided.

  (pictures from ‘Tirio’)

There will be two groups of up to 8 people:

  •  The first group will go by our minibus to Hafna Mine in the Gwydir Forest, where they will meet the Tirio staff.  We will then walk up to Llyn Parc (a mile) for the packrafting session. Afterwards we will walk back to Hafna Mine for lunch (with the other group), then back to Trefriw (5 miles).
  • The second group will walk from Trefriw to Hafna Mine (5 miles). After lunch (with the other group) we will walk on up to Llyn Parc (a mile) with the Tirio staff for the packrafting session, then return to Hafna Mine to catch our minibus back to Trefriw.

Please note that we must ask for a minimum payment of £10 from participants on this walk, as we have hired in the packrafting activity (at considerable discount – thank you, Tirio).

If you are planning on booking for this activity (using the normal button below), it is important that you also read the relevant parts of Tirio’s Terms & Conditions and Tirio’s Booking Information. The Tirio staff will ask you to sign a copy of these before you engage in the packrafting session.

In addition to your normal walking gear, Tirio advise that you bring a waterproof top and bottom, a lightweight pair of water shoes – e.g neoprene shoes or something you don’t mind getting wet, such as an old pair of trainers – a warm extra layer and a lightweight change of clothes.

(We advise a day sack of about 40 litres so that you can fit in your inflatable. You will be able to leave gear in Tirio’s locked cars at Hafna, if you wish.)

Duration:  All Day. Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance:  about 7 miles / 11 km of walking

Grade:  Moderate, and at a leisurely pace

Meet:  10.00 a.m. at Trefriw Village Hall (LL27 0JH, SH781631)
or, if the Village Hall repairs are not completed in time, at Peniel Chapel, LL27 0JL, just a minute’s walk up the road opposite the hall.

The walk entails a total of some 3500′ (1100m) of ascent, and will offer some great views – if the cloud is high. The route does not always follow obvious paths.  Note that some sections are exposed, and in a couple of places hands will be needed.

Cwm Idwal – A very special place – 2019

Saturday 18th May, 2019

Cwm Idwal – A very special place

Join us on a visit to Cwm Idwal National Nature Reserve and discover why this place is so unique.

This walk will visit some of the arctic-alpine plant communities that make this site so famous, as well as many other aspects of this magnificent site’s geology, management and human and natural history. Threats and possibilities will be discussed, and there will be plenty of time to enjoy the views and soak up the atmosphere.

(Pete’s very modest, but this is a chance to walk with an expert who knows where to find rare stuff, including the Snowdon Lily.)

Duration:  All Day. Please bring a packed lunch, plenty to drink, and clothing and footwear for the upland environment. Binoculars and hand lenses, if you have them, may also be of use.

Distance:  No more than 5 miles / 8 km

Grade and suitability: moderate, but participants need to be comfortable walking over, at times, steep and very uneven ground away from paths in an upland environment.

Meet: 8.30 a.m. at Trefriw Village Hall (LL27 0JH, SH781631) for transport via car share, or, if the Village Hall repairs are not completed in time, meet at Peniel Chapel, LL27 0JL, just a minute’s walk up the road opposite the hall.
Note – if we find that some participants are coming from the opposite direction to Trefriw, we will likely contact you and suggest meeting you at Ogwen at 9.15, if you’d prefer.

The Crafnant Horseshoe – 2019

Saturday 18th May, 2019

The Crafnant Horseshoe

See the walk here.

Not for the faint-hearted, this is possibly the toughest walk of the three days, and will demand a good level of fitness. We will be walking the route of the annual Trefriw Mill Fell Race, with a total ascent of about 4000′  (that’s higher than Snowdon!)

Ascending firstly up the ridge of Cefn Cyfarwydd – the ridge behind Trefriw – we head along its broad top to the peaks of Creigiau Gleision, from where there are incredible views over to the Glyders and the Snowdon Massif, but also down to the coast. After bagging the lesser tops of Craiglwyn, Craig Wen and the Crimpiau, we descend to Llyn Crafnant, then head over Mynydd Deulyn to Llyn Geirionydd on our way back to Trefriw.

This area is remote, one part is boggy, and it can be cold on the tops, even in May.  Please ensure that you have warm, waterproof clothing and good boots. Gaiters would not be out of order in places.

Duration:  All Day.  Please bring a packed lunch and plenty to drink.

Distance:  about 11 miles / 17.5 km

Grade:  Strenuous mountain (see the gradient profile below)

Suitability:    Fit, experienced walkers

Meet:  8.45 a.m. at Trefriw Village Hall (LL27 0JH, SH781631)
or, if the Village Hall repairs are not completed in time, at Peniel Chapel, LL27 0JL, just a minute’s walk up the road opposite the hall.

Ogwen Valley and Capel Curig round – a two-day walk – 2019

Saturday 18th & Sunday 19th May, 2019

Ogwen Valley and Capel Curig round – a two-day walk

This is a two-part, two-day walk.

On the first day we’ll walk from Trefriw up over Cefn Cyfarwydd, the ridge behind Trefriw, down to remote Llyn Cowlyd.  We’ll then walk along its shore to the Ogwen valley, crossing the road and river at Helyg (the famous climbers’ hut) before making our way to Capel Curig along the track of the old coaching road. This is an opportunity to really enjoy being in the mountains without having to climb up them!  Our first day will end at Plas y Brenin, where we can have a drink at the cafe/bar before we return on our minibus.

On the second day the minibus will take us back to Plas y Brenin where we will resume the round. We’ll return to Trefriw by an altogether different, easier route (via Llyn Crafnant), in time for our now-legendary Cake Fest at 4 p.m.!

Both days should reward you with splendid views if the clouds are high.

Please note:  By making a booking you are committing to attend on both days. You only need book once.

Duration:  Two full days. Please bring a packed lunch and plenty to drink on both days.

Distance:  about 12 miles (17 km)  +  9 miles (14 km)

Grade: Moderate/strenuous, much of it over open upland moorland paths. The first day will be the more challenging of the two, as there is some 2,000 ft of ascent, much of it in the first hour and a half!  Remember that it can be cold in the Carneddau foothills, even in May. Please ensure that you have warm, waterproof clothing and we recommend leather boots.

Meet:  Saturday at 9.00 a.m. and Sunday at 8.45 a.m. at Trefriw Village Hall (LL27 0JH, SH781631)
or, if the Village Hall repairs are not completed in time, at Peniel Chapel, LL27 0JL, just a minute’s walk up the road opposite the hall.

Cuckoo Country – 2019

Saturday 18th May, 2019

Cuckoo Country

The cuckoo (invariably several) can be heard all through May in the scenic area covered by this walk.  The minibus will take us up to Llyn Crafnant, where we will then walk beside the lake to its far end, then up over the bwlch towards Capel Curig (with great views down towards Siabod and Snowdon). On the way back, on good wide paths, we pass small Llyn Bychan before reaching Llyn Geirionydd (where there are toilets), returning to Trefriw on meadows close to the river Crafnant.

We can’t guarantee cuckoos, of course (though last year we heard loads!) but this anyway is a great round in its own right.

Duration:  All Day.  Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance:  about 10 miles / 16 km

Grade:  Moderate, with one steep section, but leisurely

Meet:  9.15 a.m. at Trefriw Village Hall (LL27 0JH, SH781631)
or, if the Village Hall repairs are not completed in time, at Peniel Chapel, LL27 0JL, just a minute’s walk up the road opposite the hall.

Roman Roaming – 2019

Saturday 18th May, 2019

Roman Roaming

This is a great scenic walk which starts at Pont y Pant in the Lledr Valley, south-west of Betws-y-coed. We will be getting there by walking off-road from Trefriw to Llanrwst station (a mile), then catching the train to Pont-y-pant. (Tickets currently cost £3.90 *, but bus pass holders can travel free on this line.)

The walk will then follow the old Roman path of Sarn Helen (more here) up over the hill to Betws y coed, passing the deserted slate quarry village of Rhiwddolion, and crossing the river Llugwy at Miners’ Bridge.  The Roman route from Betws to Trefriw (on its way to the fort at Caerhun) is less well documented, but it passed Nant BH and Llyn Geirionydd, which is the route we’ll be taking.

(* The train fare is currently £3.90, but may rise. If paying by cash, the correct fare will no doubt be appreciated.)
