Ogwen Valley and Capel Curig round – a two-day walk
This is a two-part, two-day walk.
On the first day we’ll walk from Trefriw up over Cefn Cyfarwydd, the ridge behind Trefriw, down to remote Llyn Cowlyd. We’ll then walk along its shore to the Ogwen valley, crossing the road and river at Helyg (the famous climbers’ hut) before making our way to Capel Curig along the track of the old coaching road. This is an opportunity to really enjoy being in the mountains without having to climb up them! Our first day will end at Plas y Brenin, where we can have a drink at the cafe/bar before we return on our minibus.
On the second day the minibus will take us back to Plas y Brenin where we will resume the round. We’ll return to Trefriw by an altogether different, easier route (via Llyn Crafnant), in time for our now-legendary Cake Fest at 4 p.m.!
Both days should reward you with splendid views if the clouds are high.
Please note: By making a booking you are committing to attend on both days. You only need book once.
Duration: Two full days. Please bring a packed lunch and plenty to drink on both days.
Distance: about 12 miles (17 km) + 9 miles (14 km)
Grade: Moderate/strenuous, much of it over open upland moorland paths. The first day will be the more challenging of the two, as there is some 2,000 ft of ascent, much of it in the first hour and a half! Remember that it can be cold in the Carneddau foothills, even in May. Please ensure that you have warm, waterproof clothing and we recommend leather boots.
Meet: Saturday at 9.00 a.m. and Sunday at 8.45 a.m. at Trefriw Village Hall (LL27 0JH, SH781631)
or, if the Village Hall repairs are not completed in time, at Peniel Chapel, LL27 0JL, just a minute’s walk up the road opposite the hall.
Walk Leaders: Nigel Thomas and Tony Ellis (Snowdon volunteer warden)
