River Deep, Mountain High – 2019

Friday 17th May, 2019

River Deep, Mountain High

This walk explores both low and high places; in fact, we ought really to call it ‘Mountain High, River Deep’, as we will be visiting the higher places first. We start by ascending Grinllwm, the hill which directly overlooks Trefriw and offers splendid views down the Conwy valley to the coast. We then complete this wild first section by heading to the hills above Llanrhychwyn, which offer great views over the mountains. The forest section sees us heading to the trig point at one of the highest parts of the Gwydir Forest, then descending to Gwydir. The final part is the leisurely, level walk home beside the river Conwy, almost at sea level (the river is tidal to Tan Lan, between Trefriw and Llanrwst).

Duration:  All Day. Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance:  about 9.5 miles / 15 km

Grade:  Moderate (though a very steep start), and at a leisurely pace

Meet:  9.30 a.m. at Trefriw Village Hall (LL27 0JH, SH781631)
or, if the Village Hall repairs are not completed in time, at Peniel Chapel, LL27 0JL, just a minute’s walk up the road opposite the hall.

Walk Leaders:  Karen Martindale and Graham Martindale
