Marvellous Moelwyns – 23

Friday 19th May, 2023

Marvellous Moelwyns

The quiet mountain area of the Moelwyns is one we’ve not ventured to before. It’s a beautiful, remote area, made fascinating by the industrial heritage of slate mining; indeed, part of our route follows a section of the Snowdonia Slate Trail, with another part on the Cambrian Way.

We’ll be travelling by car-share to Tanygrisiau (near Blaenau Ffestiniog – 25 mins away, see the route here) to then walk up to the lovely Llyn Cwmorthin. Passing Cwmorthin quarry, we’ll ascend to the impressive but remote remains of Rhosydd slate quarry. From here we’ll head up past the quarry workings up the steep grassy slope to the summit of Moelwyn Mawr (770 m / 2,530 ft) from where there are great views towards Snowdon to the north, Cader Idris to the south, and Cardigan Bay to the west. On our descent we’ll cross Craig Ysgafn before then ascending Moelwyn Bach (710 m  / 2,330 ft).  From here we’ll descend to near Stwlan dam (in the picture above) before descending further on the steep grassy incline towards the lower lake and back to our cars at Tanygrisiau.

Note: It can be cold at altitude, even in May; please bring warm, waterproof clothing, including hat and gloves. Your boots should be waterproof with a good tread.

Duration:  All day.  Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance:  7 miles / 11 km

Grade:  Strenuous mountain, with some 2,500 ft (800m) of ascent in total. This is a serious mountain walk and will include some uneven rocky ground, a few short ‘clambery’ sections, some steep sections and a degree of exposure at times. You should have mountain experience and be mountain fit.

Departure time:  09:00 a.m. from Trefriw Village Hall (LL27 0JH, SH781631)
Refreshments will be available in the Hall both before and after your walk. (See ‘our cafe’.)  Please stay and socialise!

Lledr Gorge-ous – 23

Friday 19th May, 2023

Lledr Gorge-ous

The scenic Lledr valley and river, with sections of gorge, run from the Crimea Pass north-east down through Dolwyddelan towards Betws y coed, and is an area we’ve not led a walk in before. Our minibus will take us to Dolwyddelan, from where we’ll make our way downstream to Betws y coed, never far from the scenic river Lledr, or the river Conwy, which it joins outside Betws.

Having reached Betws, the minibus will take us back to Trefriw.

Duration:  All day.  Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance:  about 7 miles /  11 km

Grade:  moderate

Woods, Lakes and More – 23

Friday 19th May, 2023

Woods, Lakes and More

This gorgeous walk takes in a variety of scenery – hillsides, lakes, woodland, forestry and open moorland – between Trefriw and Capel Curig. We’ll be passing Llyn Geirionydd on the way out and at our furthest point (see the picture above) we’ll hopefully have great views of Moel Siabod, Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) and the Snowdon Horseshoe. We’ll return on the moorland below Crimpiau, eventually descending from the col to scenic Llyn Crafnant, then back to Trefriw, never far from the river Crafnant. This is cuckoo country, so we’ll be very surprised if you don’t hear the cuckoo on several occasions during the walk.

Duration:  All day.  Please bring a packed lunch.

A Tale of Two Cobs – 23

Friday 19th May, 2023

A Tale of Two Cobs

Most of our walks are on the Trefriw side of the river Conwy, but here’s a chance to also walk on the other side!

The river Conwy has flood defence cobs on both sides of it, which make for beautiful (and fairly flat!) riverside walking. Our minibus will initially take us out to Maenan, across the valley from Trefriw, from where we’ll walk the 2-mile length of the northern riverside cob to Tan Lan. We’ll then take the back lanes into Llanrwst (the middle 2 miles – the only bit where there’s any ascent & descent involved) – and walk along the riverside path to our lunch stop by Pont Fawr, Llanrwst’s famous bridge. Afterwards we’ll return on the riverside path to Gower’s suspension bridge, to then walk back to Trefriw on the southern riverside cob.

In all, there’ll be plenty of easy, scenic riverside walking, and more often than not there’s plenty of birdlife to be seen on and near the river too.

Duration:  All day.  Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance:  7 miles / 11 km

Grade:  Mostly easy, leisurely (though with a lane ascent in the middle from 10m up to 100m)

Departure time:  10:10 a.m. from Trefriw Village Hall (LL27 0JH, SH781631)
Refreshments will be available in the Hall both before and after your walk. (See ‘our cafe’.)  Please stay and socialise!

A Tomb with a View – 23

Friday 19th May, 2023

A Tomb with a View

Venturing across the Conwy Valley, we will rise nearly 1,000 ft above Betws-y-coed to Moel Trefriw, one of the furthest vantage points from which to see Trefriw. The walk, with its elevated location, will give splendid views over the northern Snowdonia mountains.

We’ll then descend via the famous Neolithic burial chamber at Capel Garmon. Tombs of this type belong to an archaeological grouping called ‘Cotswold-Severn’, after the area in which they are generally found, so its unusual position so far north remains a mystery.

We’ll be travelling to the area on the No.19 service bus (fare payable: £3.10, unless you have a concessionary pass), returning to Trefriw at the end of the walk in our minibus.

Duration:  All day.  Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance:  7 miles / 11 km

Grade:  Moderate, with some 300m (1,000 ft) of ascent.

It is a steep ascent at the beginning but thereafter moderate. There are some streams and the odd boggy bits to cross, so good footwear is essential. There may be cattle in some fields.

Departure time:  10:25 a.m. from Trefriw Village Hall (LL27 0JH, SH781631) to catch 10.42 bus towards Betws-y-coed.
Refreshments will be available in the Hall both before and after your walk. (See ‘our cafe’.)  Please stay and socialise!

A Short Mindfulness Walk – 23

Friday 19th May, 2023

A Short Mindfulness Walk  (afternoon)

Join us for a meditative and contemplative walk to connect with self and the natural world.

We will initially meet at Trefriw Village Hall for a car-share to Gwydir Uchaf chapel (just 2 miles from Trefriw – see the route here).

The walk will be an hour’s slow meditative walk from Gwydir Uchaf chapel along paths on the edge of Gwydir Forest.  There will be a short session of meditation before and after the walk, including a visit to the impressive chapel.  Afterwards we will return by car-share to Trefriw.

Whilst this walk is the shortest in the Walking Festival, we often hear of its powerful effect on people.

Duration:  2 hours.

Distance:  About 1.5 miles / 2 km

Grade: Easy, leisurely  (with some ascent and descent)

Departure time:  1:30 p.m. from Trefriw Village Hall (LL27 0JH, SH781631)

Shapely Siabod – 23

Saturday 20th May, 2023

Shapely Siabod

Moel Siabod is the mountain which dominates the skyline from all round Capel Curig (and is visible from up the lane in Trefriw). This is a challenging round starting from Pont Cyfyng, near Capel Curig. Our minibus will take us there, then we’ll walk in past the old quarry to ascend Moel Siabod by its east Ridge, which involves a bit of easy scrambling and some slight exposure on the section from Llyn y Foel up to the summit. From the summit (2,861 ft / 872m) there are great views of the Snowdonia mountains in all directions, but particularly of the Snowdon Horseshoe.  We will descend to Plas y Brenin down Siabod’s broad, grassy back, then follow the scenic river Llugwy back to Pont Cyfyng. Our minibus will return us to Trefriw.

Please note that it can be cold on the tops, even in May. Please ensure that you have warm, waterproof clothing and good boots with a good tread.

Duration:  All day.  Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance:  About 7 miles / 11 km

Grade:  A moderate/strenuous mountain walk, with some 2,500 ft (760m) of ascent.

Cracking Crimpiau – 23

Saturday 20th May, 2023

Cracking Crimpiau

Crimpiau is a stunning mountain viewpoint between Llyn Crafnant and Capel Curig, and despite being only 475m / 1,558 ft high, many describe it as one of the best viewpoints in Snowdonia. We’d have to agree! (In the picture are Moel Siabod, the Snowdon Horseshoe and the Glyderau. Behind the camera is the Crafnant valley.)

(Crimpiau is pronounced locally ‘Crimp – ee – a’, meaning hard sharp edge; ridge, spur; ledge.)

We’ll walk from Trefriw out to this viewpoint, passing Llyn Crafnant on the way, then return to Trefriw a different scenic way, past Llyn Geirionydd.

Duration:  All day.  Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance: 10 miles / 16 km

Grade:  Moderate/strenuous  (mostly moderate, though with a steepish ascent to Crimpiau itself)

Departure time:  09:20 a.m. from Trefriw Village Hall (LL27 0JH, SH781631)

On this scenic walk – through meadows and forest paths – which follows the Betws to Capel Curig section of the Snowdonia Slate Trail, we’ll initially never be far from the river Llugwy, and its numerous falls, including the famous Swallow Falls. As we approach the end of the walk we’ll get great views over the mountains.

The walk will end at Plas y Brenin at Capel Curig, where we can have a cuppa while waiting for our minibus back to Trefriw.

There are so many scenic ways back from Betws y coed to Trefriw that we have no hesitation in repeating this gorgeous walk. We’ll be travelling to our start point at Betws y coed on the No.19 service bus (fare payable – £3.10 – unless you have a concessionary pass), then walking back on good tracks over the edge of the Gwydir Forest, passing several beautiful lakes and viewpoints.

We’ll initially head up through the Aberllyn gorge and then along the shore of Llyn Parc. From here, it’s downhill to Hafna mine, where we’ll probably stop for lunch. The walk then takes us over the highest part of the Gwydir Forest, past some gorgeous lakes with great views over towards the mountains. (There are toilets at Llyn Geirionydd.) This is a gem of a walk at a leisurely pace.

To Grinllwm and beyond – 23

Saturday 20th May, 2023

To Grinllwm and beyond

Grinllwm (meaning ‘withered, bare’) is the hill which directly overlooks Trefriw. This peaceful, scenic walk starts by ascending this steep hill, at the top of which we’ll make slight detour to the highest point and take a break to enjoy the splendid views down the Conwy valley to the coast.

The other side of Grinllwm finds us on the edge of the sleepy hamlet of Llanrhychwyn where we’ll call in at the remote tiny church, one of the oldest churches in Wales.

Our route then taken us on the edge of the Gwydir Forest, up to a high spot above Llyn Glangors and the old Pandora mine where we get good views of the north Snowdonia mountains. Little lakes, Legends and Loads of nature – 23

Saturday 20th May, 2023

Little lakes, Legends and Loads of nature

We will be using a car-share to travel to the start of our walk, which will be at the site of the former Cyffty Mine near Nant Bwlch-yr-Haiarn in the Gwydir Forest. (Cyffty is 4 miles from Trefriw – see the journey here.)

This is a fairly gentle walk, starting at one of the old lead mines of Nant Bwlch-yr-Haiarn. The route will follow a network of lakes formed for this centuries-old industry and explore the wild flowers, nature, history and legends of this unique area. Mainly on well-worn paths and forest tracks, with some short sections on steeper rough ground, we will gradually rise to a natural viewpoint for a lunch break before continuing back to the starting point. After the walk we will return in the cars to Trefriw.

This is a chance to look at nature in the hills with a couple of experts in this field.

Duration:  Half-day.  Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance:   About 5 miles

Grade:  Moderate/leisurely

Departure time:  11:00 a.m. from Trefriw Village Hall (LL27 0JH, SH781631) using car share.

Wild Horses

We’ll be catching the no. 19 service bus (fare: £3.60, unless you have a concessionary pass) to the coast at Conwy, from where we will walk up over Conwy Mountain to Sychnant Pass, initially with great coastal views. We will then head inland, partly on the Cambrian Way, to Pen-y-Gaer, an Iron Age fort overlooking the Conwy Valley, passing through an area of ancient standing stones and burial chambers. The walk should reward us with splendid views throughout, and in this part of the Carneddau it is common to see wild ponies, though we can’t promise it!

At the end of the walk our minibus will collect us from above Tal y bont and bring us back to Trefriw.

Duration:  All day.  Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance:  about 10 miles / 16 km

Majesty & Magic – 23

Sunday 21st May, 2023

Majesty & Magic

This is our big mountain walk this year  – a long, tough, high level hike which taken in Wales’s second highest peak, Carnedd Llywelyn.

We’ll firstly be travelling by minibus to Cwm Eigiau, in the foothills of the Carneddau.
From there we’ll be walking to the summit of Carnedd Llywelyn (the ‘majesty’ – Llywelyn was a ruler of Wales), at 1,064 m / 3,491 ft only 21m lower than Snowdon, passing Llyn Melynllyn on the way, then returning via the spectacular Pen yr Helgi Du ridge and Pen Llithrig y Wrach (the ‘magic’ of the witch, 799 m / 2,621 ft) to Cwm Cowlyd. From here we will get the minibus back to Trefriw.  In good weather the views will be splendid, but make no bones about it, this is a long, tough walk with lots of ascent (some 1,100m / 3,700 ft) and some exposed ridges.

The route does not always follow obvious paths.  Note that some sections are exposed, and in a couple of places hands will be needed.

Remember that it is colder at altitude, even in May, and it can be wet too. Full water/windproofs, plenty of warm clothing (including hat and gloves) and good mountain boots are essential.

Duration:  All day.  Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance:  About 10½ miles / 16½ km

Grade:  Strenuous high mountain.

Suitability:    Fit, experienced walkers

Departure time:  09:00 a.m. from Trefriw Village Hall (LL27 0JH, SH781631)

Under the Witch’s Gaze – 23

Sunday 21st May, 2023

Under the Witch’s Gaze

Pen Llithrig y Wrach (‘the Slippery Top of the Witch’) is the small mountain which overlooks Llyn Cowlyd. We’ll be getting aquainted with both of these two, which lie in the foothills of the Carneddau mountains behind Trefriw.

We’ll initially walk off-road up Cefn Cyfarwydd, the steep ridge behind Trefriw, to then descend to Cowlyd Dam, at the end of Llyn Cowlyd, the deepest lake in Snowdonia. We’ll then walk the mile alongside the lake to its southern end, before heading up the adjacent peak of Pen Llithrig y Wrach; it’s a steep ascent but from the top you’ll be rewarded by great views over the Snowdonia mountains. (The picture shows both Llyn Cowlyd and Pen Llithrig y Wrach.) We’ll descend its long ridge, eventually cutting back to Siglen and the lane to Trefriw. From here the minibus will then pick us up and take us back to Trefriw.

Pen Llithrig y Wrach, the highest point, is 799m (2621 ft), but total ascent for this walk is over 3,500 ft.

Please note that it can be cold on the tops, even in May. Please ensure that you have warm, waterproof clothing (including hat & gloves) and sturdy boots with a good tread.

Walking with the Wynns – 23

Sunday 21st May, 2023

Walking with the Wynns

The title of this walk relates to the Wynn family of Gwydir Castle. Gwydir was the seat of the powerful Wynn family who were descendants of the Kings of Gwynedd, and were one of the most significant families of north Wales during the Tudor and Stuart periods.

The leisurely walk is one of our easier ones this year, having only about 200m (650 ft) of elevation. From Trefriw we’ll initially take a scenic route round the Cob and alongside the river Conwy as we head to Llanrwst and Gwydir Castle. This walk includes free entry into Gwydir Castle and its gardens, where we can spend some time. Afterwards we’ll head up to Gwydir Uchaf chapel with its amazing interior and its adjacent small Tudor maze. On the way back to Trefriw we’ll call into the Grey Mare’s Tail, a splendid waterfall which feeds the water features at Gwydir via a half-mile leat across the meadows. It was Lady Willoughby of Gwydir who gave the waterfall its name. (Time allowing we might also visit the site of the Tudor bowling green.)

Duration:  All day.  Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance: About 6 miles / 10 km

Wings over Trefriw – 23

Sunday 21st May, 2023

Wings over Trefriw

This is a superb chance to walk with Jack Slattery from RSPB Cymru, who will be leading the group through the woods above Trefriw, up to the moors of Cefn Cyfarwydd, the ridge immediately behind the village.

In the woods we should find pied flycatchers, wood warblers, redstarts and tree pipits – all really special birds found in Welsh woodlands. Up on the moors we’ll hope to see hen harriers and red grouse. And no doubt we’ll see plenty more besides!

The walk will take us up to 500m high at its highest point (on the ridge); it’s essentially uphill on the way out and downhill on the way back, but the pace will be leisurely, and – birdlife aside – you’ll be rewarded with great views.

Duration:  All day.  Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance:  6½ miles (10½ km)

Grade:  Moderate, with some steeper sections. Please wear good footwear (there might be a couple of boggy sections), and bear in mind that it can be chilly on the tops, even in May.

Departure time:  10:40 a.m. from Trefriw Village Hall (LL27 0JH, SH781631)
Refreshments will be available in the Hall both before and after your walk. (See ‘our cafe’.)  Please stay and socialise!
