Tryfan North Ridge

Friday 16th May, 2025 – 8.30a.m.

Tryfan North Ridge

Tryfan’s rocky North Ridge is an iconic grade 1 scramble and is one of the most popular routes in the UK.

Tryfan or Tri faen –  3 rocks – stands proud above the Ogwen Valley. At 918m it is one of the fourteen 3,000 ft peaks in Wales.

We will be scrambling up from the valley floor – in the footsteps of mountaineers George Mallory and Sir Edmond Hilary, of Everest fame – to its summit which is crowned by two fabled standing stones, Sion a Sian or Adam and Eve.

We will have an early start to avoid the crowds and enjoy a well earned lunch break high above the Ogwen Valley, returning via the South Summit and Llyn Bochlwyd.

There will be some steep, rocky and exposed sections so a steady head for heights will be required. This scramble is for fit and experienced walkers only.

Remember that it will be much colder on the tops, even in May.  Please ensure that you have good, warm, waterproof clothing, including hat and gloves, and suitable sturdy boots (no trainers).

Duration:  All day.  Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance:  3 Miles / 4.5km   Ascent 610m

Grade:  Strenuous mountain, with a long section of grade 1 scramble. A 610m ascent, exposed in places.

Departure time:  08.30 a.m. from Trefriw Village Hall (LL27 0JH, SH781631)
Note : This walk will use Car Share to access the start of the walk.
Please make sure you register at the village hall above first.

Refreshments will be available in the Hall both before and after your walk. (See ‘our cafe’.)  Please stay and socialise!

Crimpiau

Friday 16th May, 2025 – 09.00a.m.

Crimpiau

Crimpiau is a stunning mountain viewpoint between Llyn Crafnant and Capel Curig, and despite being only 475m / 1,558 ft high, many describe it as one of the best viewpoints in Snowdonia.

(Crimpiau is pronounced locally ‘Crimp – ee – a’, meaning hard sharp edge; ridge, spur; ledge.)

We’ll be taking the minibus to Capel Curig, then taking a scenic walk back to Trefriw. Initially we’ll head up the hill above Capel Curig, with splendid views of the Snowdon Horseshoe and the mountains of the Glyderau and the Carneddau, and after two miles of walking we’ll make a short ½-mile steep detour to ascend Crimpiau.
Afterwards we’ll descend to the Crafnant valley, and walk along the lakeside, to then return to Trefriw, mostly off-road along the Crafnant valley.  It’s a great walk with lovely views and plenty to see from start to finish.

Duration:  All day.  Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance: 7 miles / 11 km

Grade:  Moderate (though with a short strenuous ascent to Crimpiau itself. It’s not a long walk so the pace will be leisurely.)

Please be aware that this is a rural area and that all our walks take us out into the countryside where some parts of paths and tracks will be uneven and sometimes wet and slippery underfoot; it isn’t like walking on pavements!

Departure time:  09.00 a.m. from Trefriw Village Hall (LL27 0JH, SH781631)  We’ll be taking the minibus to Capel Curig

Refreshments will be available in the Hall both before and after your walk. (See ‘our cafe’.)  Please stay and socialise!

Wybrnant Wander

Friday 16th May, 2025 10.00am

Wybrnant Wander

This scenic walk will take us high above the Lledr Valley, where we will be treated to some stunning mountain views. On the way we will hike along an ancient drovers road and through upland farmland and woodland, returning to Dolwyddelan along the Afon Lledr and its dramatic gorge.
At the centre of our walk is the 16th Century farmhouse, Tŷ Mawr Wybrnant, the birthplace of Bishop William Morgan, whose work translating the Bible into Welsh helped ensure the survival of the language. We will be given a private tour of the house and hopefully a panad!
This is a moderate, all-day hike, with some steep sections early on. Sturdy waterproof hiking boots are a must as there will be very uneven, wet, muddy and slippery sections underfoot, as well as plenty of boggy terrain.

Duration:  All day.  Please bring a packed lunch, water and plenty of snacks

Distance:  7 Miles / 11km.

Cwm Idwal

Friday 16th May, 2025 11.00am

Cwm Idwal National Nature Reserve

Join us for a circular walk that whilst not very challenging offers spectacular mountain scenery including views of Tryfan, the Glyderau and the mysterious Devil’s Kitchen.

As well as a place of legend it is also renowned  for its natural history and fascinating geology.

The light (and weather) in this glacial valley changes constantly. Legend tells us that the lake is named after Idwal, the son of Owain of Gwynedd who drowned there and it is said that no bird
has since flown over the lake’s surface.

Let’s go and see if that’s true!

Duration:  Half day, but bring refreshments and plenty to drink

Distance:  2.5 Miles / 4 km

Grade:  Moderate:  A medium length walk which may involve some uneven ground.
Sturdy boots and wet weather clothing recommended.

Walking for wellbeing

Friday 16th May, 2025 – 1.00pm

Walking for wellbeing – Connecting with Nature

Join us for a meditative walk with a focus on depth of connection rather than distance travelled. Research shows that connection with nature is a more powerful predictor of wellbeing than time spent in nature. The intention for this walk is for participants to leave with new experiences and ideas about how to connect with and benefit from nature in their daily lives.

We will initially meet at Trefriw Village Hall for a car-share to Gwydir Uchaf chapel, just 2 miles (5 mins) from Trefriw – see the route here.

Our route will be an hour’s gentle walk from Gwydir Uchaf chapel along paths on the edge of Gwydir Forest.  There will be a pauses to learn about and practise nature connection before, during and after the walk, as well as a visit to the impressive and peaceful chapel.

Duration:  Half Day

Distance:  1.5 mi / 2.5 km

Grade:  Easy,  leisurely  (with some ascent and descent)

The two main hills we’ll be walking, are Pen yr Helgi Du (‘Head/Hill of the Black Hound’) and Pen Llithrig y Wrach. (‘The Slippery Peak of the Witch’).

This is a strenuous mountain walk, but if the weather is kind we’ll be rewarded by amazing views.

The Crafnant Horseshoe

Saturday 17th May, 2025   09.00am

Crafnant Horseshoe

Not for the faint-hearted, this is possibly the toughest walk of the three days, and will demand a good level of fitness. We will be walking the route of the Trefriw Mill Fell Race, with a total ascent of about 4000′  (that’s higher than Snowdon!)

Ascending firstly up the ridge of Cefn Cyfarwydd – the ridge behind Trefriw – we head along its broad top to the peaks of Creigiau Gleision, from where there are incredible views over to the Glyders and the Snowdon Massif, but also down to the coast. After bagging the lesser tops of Craiglwyn, Craig Wen and the Crimpiau, we descend to Llyn Crafnant, then head over Mynydd Deulyn to Llyn Geirionydd on our way back to Trefriw.

Duration:  All day.  Please bring a packed lunch, and plenty of water.

Distance: about 11 miles / 17.5 km

Grade: Strenuous (High) Mountain
This area is remote, one part is boggy, and it can be cold on the tops, even in May.  Please ensure that you have warm, waterproof clothing and good boots. Gaiters would not be out of order in places.

Departure time:  09.00 a.m. from Trefriw Village Hall (LL27 0JH, SH781631)

Bluebells and Cake

Saturday 17th May, 2025   11.00am

Bluebells and Cake

Join us for the walk that attracts many visitors to Trefriw– the classic round which takes in Llyn Crafnant and Llyn Geirionydd.
From Trefriw we ascend past the Fairy Falls and onto the edge of Gwydir Forest.
Gwydir Forest was mentioned in written texts at least 500 years ago, and we’ll certainly witness some of its history, passing old mine works, the infamous Klondike mill and the monument to the bard, Taliesin.

The views from both lakes are stunning. We’ll take a break for lunch and there will be plenty of opportunity to talk to your guides about the area along the way. At Llyn Crafnant we’ll walk ½ mile along its shore to the lakeside cafe (which is where the cake comes in!)

After completing our visit to the two lakes we’ll head back to the Trefriw. If the seasons are kind to us, we’ll take in the vast and stunning field of bluebells as we return to the village.

Duration:  All day.  Please bring a packed lunch.

Discover Dolgarrog

Saturday 17th May, 2025   11.00am

Discover Dolgarrog, its history and natural history

Dolgarrog is a small village situated on the western side of the Conwy Valley a few miles north of Trefriw.

2025 marks the 100th Anniversary of the Dolgarrog Dam disaster when one of the then newly built dams above the village, created to provide water for the village’s Aluminium works, burst and claimed the lives of sixteen of its residents.
This walk will start at the memorial gardens established in memory of the disaster, then will climb steeply on old trackways through the ancient woodland of Coed Dolgarrog National Nature Reserve up to Llyn Coedty.
A landscape rich in cuckoos, ghost woods and Celtic Rainforest. From there we’ll follow an old trackway over towards Llyn Cowlyd with glorious views of the Conwy valley and the Carneddau mountains then descend back to the village. On our way we’ll explore the rich human and natural history of the area visiting once-famous waterfalls, deserted settlements now reclaimed by woodland, and evidence of the area’s industrial past and present.

Duration:  All day.  Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance: About 6 miles / 10 km

Carneddau High

A Carneddau walk starting near Llanbedr-y-Cennin, high above the Conwy valley.

We’ll descend down into Cwm Eigiau beneath the glowering cliffs of Carnedd Llewellyn making our way back over to Llyn Cowlyd, where we’ll be picked-up and ride back to Trefriw.

Duration:  All day.  Please bring a packed lunch and plenty of water and snacks.

The Huw Tom upland walk

Sunday 18 May, 2025   09.15am

The Huw Tom upland walk

Huw Thomas Edwards was a Welsh politician and trade union leader who started from humble beginnings working in Graiglwyd quarry in Penmaenmawr. He was born in Rowen, in the Conwy valley, and walked the route between the two places each day.

The Huw Tom Upland Walk is an iconic linear walk through time, sprinkled with historical remnants and relics. The route also offers spectacular views of the Conwy Valley, the Great Orme and across the coast and Liverpool Bay.

You can download a pdf of the walk here.

We’ll be taking our minibus out to the Penmaenmawr Museum, then walking over the tops and down to the Ty Gwyn pub in Rowen for a panad or pint.  We will then travel back in the minibus to Trefriw.

Duration:  All day.  Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance:  6 miles  / 10 km

Grade:  Moderate, with some steeper sections and some rougher ground.

Please be aware that this is a rural area and that all our walks take us out into the countryside where some parts of paths and tracks will be uneven and sometimes wet and slippery underfoot. This is an upland walk, so make sure you have warm, waterproof clothing with you and good footwear.

Departure time:  09:15 a.m. from Trefriw Village Hall (LL27 0JH, SH781631)
Minibus Out and back
Refreshments will be available in the Hall both before and after your walk. (See ‘our cafe’.)  Please stay and socialise!

Heading Home

Sunday 18 May, 2025    10.00am

Heading Home

A gem of a walk, along a high level route back to Trefriw from Betws y coed .

From Trefriw we’ll be walking firstly down towards the river Conwy, and crossing on the suspension bridge to reach the newly renamed North Llanrwst and Trefriw railway station, where we’ll catch the Conwy Valley line train to Betws y coed. From there we’ll be walking back to Trefriw on good tracks through parts of the Gwydir Forest, passing several beautiful lakes and viewpoints.

We’ll initially head up through the Aberllyn gorge and along the shore of Llyn Parc, then down to old Hafna Mine, which is exactly half way, and is where we’ll stop for lunch. The walk then takes us over the highest part of the Gwydir Forest, past some gorgeous lakes with great views over towards the mountains, before descending to Trefriw.

Duration:  All day.  Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance: 8 miles / 12 km

Grade:  Moderate, with a couple of steep sections

Please be aware that this is a rural area and that all our walks take us out into the countryside where some parts of paths and tracks will be uneven and sometimes wet and slippery underfoot; it isn’t like walking on pavements!

Departure time:  10:00 a.m. from Trefriw Village Hall (LL27 0JH, SH781631)
We are travelling out by the 10:46 a.m. train from Trefriw & Llanrwst North railway station. If you have a TFW bus pass you can use this service for free (otherwise it will cost you about £1.90).

Please make sure you check in and register at the village hall above first.

Refreshments will be available in the Hall both before and after your walk. (See ‘our cafe’.)  Please stay and socialise!
