Bluebells and Cake 25

Saturday 16th May, 2025

Bluebells and Cake

Join us for the walk that attracts many visitors to Trefriw– the classic round which takes in Llyn Crafnant and Llyn Geirionydd.
From Trefriw we ascend past the Fairy Falls and onto the edge of Gwydir Forest.
Gwydir Forest was mentioned in written texts at least 500 years ago, and we’ll certainly witness
some of its history, passing old mine works, the infamous Klondike mill and the monument to the bard, Taliesin.

The views from both lakes are stunning. We’ll take a break for lunch and there will be plenty of opportunity
to talk to your guides about the area along the way. At Llyn Crafnant we’ll walk ½ mile along its shore
to the lakeside cafe (which is where the cake comes in!)

After completing our visit to the two lakes we’ll head back to the Trefriw. If the seasons are kind to us,
we’ll take in the vast and stunning field of bluebells as we return to the village

Dolgarrog 25

Saturday 17th May, 2025

Dolgarrog

Dolgarrog is a small village situated on the western side of the Conwy Valley a few miles north of Trefriw. Looming over the village rises Coed Dolgarrog National Nature Reserve.

The current village and its housing is almost entirely a result of a vast piece of engineering work carried out in the early 20th century that harnessed the water of the Carneddau mountains to power an aluminium smelter in the village.

This walk will climb up from the village though the Nature Reserve and will explore the industrial and pre-industrial history of the area. On the way we will visit once-famous waterfalls, deserted settlements, some very rare wildlife habitats, and gain some glorious views of the Conwy valley and the Carneddau mountains.

Now that’s what I call local 25

Saturday 17th May, 2025

Now that’s what I call local

Most of our walks are on the Trefriw side of the river Conwy, but here’s a chance to also walk on the other side!

The river Conwy has flood defence cobs on both sides of it, which make for beautiful (and fairly flat!) riverside walking. From Trefriw we’ll walk on the southern riverside Cob round to Gower’s suspension bridge, then follow the riverside path into Llanrwst at Pont Fawr, Llanrwst’s famous old bridge. From here we’ll head back out of town using the back lanes, then descending to Tan Lan (this middle 2 miles is the only bit of ascent and descent).

We’ll now be on the other side of the river Conwy, and we’ll follow the 2-mile length of the northern riverside cob to Maenan, from where our minibus will bring us back to Trefriw.

In all, there’ll be plenty of easy, scenic riverside walking, and more often than not there’s plenty of birdlife to be seen on and near the river too.

Mill Race 25

Saturday 17th May, 2025

Mill Race

Not for the faint-hearted, this is possibly the toughest walk of the three days, and will demand a good level of fitness. We will be walking the route of the Trefriw Mill Fell Race, with a total ascent of about 4000′  (that’s higher than Snowdon!)

Ascending firstly up the ridge of Cefn Cyfarwydd – the ridge behind Trefriw – we head along its broad top to the peaks of Creigiau Gleision, from where there are incredible views over to the Glyders and the Snowdon Massif, but also down to the coast. After bagging the lesser tops of Craiglwyn, Craig Wen and the Crimpiau, we descend to Llyn Crafnant, then head over Mynydd Deulyn to Llyn Geirionydd on our way back to Trefriw.

This area is remote, one part is boggy, and it can be cold on the tops, even in May.  Please ensure that you have warm, waterproof clothing and good boots. Gaiters would not be out of order in places.

Duration:  All day.  Please bring a packed lunch.

Wild Swimming 25

Friday 16th May, 2025

Wild Swimming

The walk will leave from Trefriw, and climb up towards Llyn y Parc.  The steep climb through the forest should have us working up a good sweat – and make us look forward to a lovely refreshing dip in the lake.

Upon reaching the lake, you can change into your swimwear or wetsuit, and load up your waterproof bag (also provided).  You will then slip into the calm waters of the lake and swim as much or as little as you like. The swim is part of the journey and at journeys end you will be met with the Gone Swimming traditional hot drinks and post-swim cakes .

The speed and distance is up to you but you must be able to swim confidently.

Please bring warm clothes including hat and gloves. Flip-flops/Crocs are useful for managing stony ground.
