Hot Rocks and Megaliths – 2020

Sunday 17th May, 2020

Hot Rocks and Megaliths

This is a traverse across deep time on the northern edge of the National Park.  We’ll be travelling by minibus to Bwlch y Ddeufaen, in the Carneddau foothills above Rowen, then walking on good track, open moorland and 1/4 bog-crossing (no snorkelling!).  Walking poles and waterproof boots a must!

We’ll return on the minibus, and be back in time for our now-legendary Cake Fest at 4 p.m.!

Please remember that it can be cold in the foothils of the Carneddau mountains, even in May, so make sure you’ve got warm, waterproof clothing, and good footwear.

Duration:  All day.  Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance:  About 6 miles / 10 km

Grade:  Moderate, but leisurely

If Carlsberg did good views … – 2020

Sunday 17th May, 2020

If Carlsberg did good views …

Crimpiau (pronounced locally ‘Crimp – ee – a’, and meaning hard sharp edge; ridge, spur; ledge) is located between Capel Curig and Llyn Crafnant and is a stunning viewpoint despite being only 475m / 1558′ high. Photographer Nick Livesey writes in his book ‘Photographing the Snowdonia Mountains’, “Being little more than a minor incident on a long knobbly ridge, lowly Crimpiau harbours a secret that few would suspect from below”.  Nick’s not alone – many articles describe the lowly summit of Crimpiau as one of the best viewpoints in Snowdonia.

We’ll be taking the minibus to Capel Curig, then taking a scenic walk back to Trefriw, making a small steep detour to ascend Crimpiau. And Crimpiau aside, it’s a great walk with lovely views from start to finish.

We’ll be back in time for our now-legendary Cake Fest at 4 p.m.!

Duration:  All day.  Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance:  About 9 miles / 14 km

Grade:  Moderate, but leisurely

Meet:  9:15 a.m. at Trefriw Village Hall (LL27 0JH, SH781631)
Tea and cake will be available in the Hall both before and after your walk.

A Walk in the Lakes – 2020

Sunday 17th May, 2020

A Walk in the Lakes

Join us for the walk that attracts many visitors to Trefriw – the classic round of Llyn Crafnant and Llyn Geirionydd. From Trefriw we ascend past the Fairy Falls and onto the edge of Gwydir Forest. Gwydir Forest was mentioned in written texts at least 500 years ago, and we’ll certainly witness some of its history, passing old mine works, the infamous Klondyke mill and the monument to the bard, Taliesin.

The views at both lakes are great; Crafnant is justly described as one of the most beautiful lakes in Wales.  After completing our loop of the two lakes we’ll head back to Trefriw, and if the season is kind to us, we’ll take in a vast and stunning field of bluebells as we return to the village.

We’ll be back in time for our now-legendary Cake Fest at 4 p.m.!

Duration:  All day.  Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance:  About 6.5 miles / 10.5 km

Grade:  Moderate, but leisurely

Meet:  9:45 a.m. at Trefriw Village Hall (LL27 0JH, SH781631)
Tea and cake will be available in the Hall both before and after your walk.

The Grey Mare’s Tail – 2020

Sunday 17th May, 2020

The Grey Mare’s Tail

Join us for a local walk from the village, calling in at the Grey Mare’s Tail, a splendid waterfall a couple of miles away. This waterfall also provides water for the fountains at Gwydir Castle, via a leat at the top, and it was Lady Willoughby of Gwydir who gave it its name. We will then head on past Gwydir to the meadows at Llanrwst, returning to Trefriw alongside the river Conwy.

We’ll be back in time for our now-legendary Cake Fest at 4 p.m.!

Duration:  All day.  Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance:  About 6 miles / 9.5 km

Grade:  Moderate, but leisurely

Meet:  10:15 a.m. at Trefriw Village Hall (LL27 0JH, SH781631)
Tea and cake will be available in the Hall both before and after your walk.

Wildflower Wisdom – 2020

Sunday 17th May, 2020

Wildflower wisdom

Plants have evolved their own ways of combatting danger and disease. Our ancestors learnt how to make use of these attributes long before the discovery of antibiotics. Find out how the plants that grow in the Crafnant valley were essential to previous generations of villagers in their everyday lives. This is an opportunity to discover more about the history of the village as well.

A leisurely walk through the woodlands and meadows famous for bluebells and other spring flowers.  Most of the walk is through fields or on good tracks. (There is one stile.)

We’ll be back in time for our now-legendary Cake Fest at 4 p.m.!

Duration:  Half day, starting late morning .  Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance:  About 4 miles / 6.5 km

Grade:  Easy, and at a leisurely pace

Meet:  11:00 a.m. at Trefriw Village Hall (LL27 0JH, SH781631)
(This will be convenient for anyone arriving by bus to Trefriw.)
