Betws to Trefriw – A woodland return

Sunday 17th May, 2026   09.15 a.m.

Betws to Trefriw
A woodland return               Tickets: £12
After a minibus drop-off at the popular Pont y Pair bridge in Betws-y-Coed, we follow the Afon Llugwy upstream across open meadows to the distinctive Miners’ Bridge. A short, quiet stretch of road then leads to a viewpoint above Swallow Falls, with excellent opportunities to pause and take in the scenery.

We continue by skirting above the Ugly House, enjoying views across the river valley and towards Moel Siabod, before climbing on forestry tracks to the pretty Llyn Bychan — an ideal spot for a lunch stop. From here we descend to Llyn Geirionydd, where public toilets are available, and finish the walk on a beautiful descending path through birch and oak woodland, returning to the village of Trefriw.

Blue Water and Grey Wings

Sunday 17th May, 2026   08.45 a.m.

Blue Water and Grey Wings
Lakes, Woods, and Moorland              Tickets: £12
This gorgeous walk (walking out from Trefriw and back) takes in a variety of scenery – hillsides, lakes, woodland, forestry and open moorland – between Trefriw and Capel Curig. We’ll be passing Llyn Geirionydd on the way out (where there are toilets) and at our furthest point (see the picture above) we’ll hopefully have great views of Moel Siabod, Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) and the Snowdon Horseshoe. We’ll return on the moorland below Crimpiau, eventually descending from the col to scenic Llyn Crafnant, then back to Trefriw, never far from the river Crafnant. This is cuckoo country (that’s the “grey wings”), so we’ll be very surprised if you don’t hear the cuckoo on numerous occasions during the walk.

Good views throughout!

Duration:  All day. Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance:  11½ miles / 18 km approximately

Siabod Traverse A route less travelled

Sunday 17th May, 2026   08.00 a.m.

Siabod
A route less travelled               Tickets: £12
Taking advantage of a start at altitude, near the historic Pen y Gwryd Hotel — a favourite haunt of Everest mountaineers — we set off on a steady climb with sweeping views of Yr Wyddfa unfolding behind us. This broad ridge offers a quieter, less-travelled approach to the summit of Moel Siabod, with the scenery improving at every step. From the top, on a clear day, we may even catch a glimpse of the sea in the distance.

Our descent leads us down towards Capel Curig, passing through woodland before finishing at another iconic mountaineers’ hub, Plas y Brenin National Outdoor Centre. Here, there’s time for a well-earned rest and a drink in the bar while we wait for the minibus home.

Duration: All day. Please bring a packed lunch

Distance:  6 Miles / 10 km

Grade:  Moderate / Strenuous
This walk involves sustained ascent and descent in steep, uneven, and rocky terrain. It may be wet and slippery underfoot and include exposed mountain tops. This walk is remote, in parts boggy, and it can be cold on the tops, even in May.  Please ensure that you have warm, waterproof clothing and good boots. Gaiters would not be out of order in places.

Transport: Minibus out and back

A Tomb with a View

Sunday 17th May, 2026   10.00 a.m.

A Tomb with a view
Moel Trefriw and Capel Garmon     Tickets: £12

Venturing across the Conwy Valley, we will rise nearly 1,000 ft above Betws-y-coed to Moel Trefriw, one of the furthest vantage points from which to see Trefriw. The walk, with its elevated location, will give splendid views over the northern Eryri -Snowdonia mountains.
We’ll then descend via the famous Neolithic burial chamber at Capel Garmon. Tombs of this type belong to an archaeological grouping called ‘Cotswold-Severn’, after the area in which they are generally found, so its unusual position so far north remains a mystery.

Duration:  All day.  Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance:  7 miles / 11 km

Grade: Moderate with some 300m (1,000 ft) of ascent.
This walk has some steep and uneven paths and tracks which may be wet and slippery underfoot. There may be longer periods of ascent, and you may find poles useful. Please dress for the weather and have suitable footwear. There may be cattle in some fields.
