Saturday 16th May, 2020

Cwmorthin and the Moelwyns

We’ll be travelling in our minibus to Tanygrisiau (near Blaenau Ffestiniog) to then walk up to the lovely Llyn Cwmorthin. Passing Cwmorthin quarry on the far side, we’ll ascend to the remote remains of Rhosydd slate quarry to then head on to Twll Mawr and the small peak of Moel yr Hydd (648 m / 2,126 ft), a grand viewpoint for the Moelwyns and many of the Snowdonia peaks. We’ll descend to the remains of Wrysgan quarry, with its tunnel and superb hyperbolic incline, to then return to Tanygrisiau, descending via Wrysgan Quarry, weather permitting.  The Lakeside cafe will provide a welcome cuppa while we wait for the minibus to take us back to Trefriw.

It can be cold at altitude, even in May; please bring warm, waterproof clothing, including hat and gloves.
