Snowdon Earlybird

Friday 17th May, 2019

Snowdon Earlybird

Over the years we’ve met a lot of people who confess they’ve never walked up Snowdon – but really want to!  Well, here’s your opportunity, in the company of a couple of Snowdon Volunteer Wardens who know pretty much everything there is to know about the mountain.  We’ll be leaving early, ascending via the Pyg Track so that we get to the summit as the cafe opens. Descent will be via the Miners Track.

Our minibus will take us to Pen-y-Pass, and bring us back afterwards.

(Note that whilst we are expecting that the summit cafe and toilets will be open, if there are high winds trains will not run to the summit, so the building will not be open.)

Remeber that it can be cold on Snowdon, even in May.  Full water/windproofs, warm clothing, and good mountain boots are essential.

Duration: All Day – x hours. Please bring a packed lunch and plenty to drink.

Distance: 7.5 miles / x km

Grade:  Strenuous mountain

Meet: x.xx a.m. at Trefriw Village Hall (LL27 0JH, SH781631)

Walk Leaders: Tony Ellis and Linda Roberts

Dolgarrog Disaster

Friday 17th May, 2019

Dolgarrog Disaster Walk

This walk starts on the edge of Dolgarrog, just 5 minutes from Trefriw (we’ll get there by our minibus). We will then visit Coedty reservoir, high above the village, before heading along the trackbed of the old tramway to remote Llyn Eigiau and its dam. It was the breaching of this dam which caused the disaster in 1925. On return, we will visit the memorial at Dolgarrog.

Please remember that it can be cold in the foothils of the Carneddau mountains, even in May, so make sure you’ve got warm, waterproof clothing, and good footwear.

Duration:  All Day. Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance:  about x miles / x km

Grade:  Moderate/Strenuous, with some steeper uphill sections, particularly at the beginning where the first 3/4 mile has some 800 ft of ascent.

Meet:  x a.m. at Trefriw Village Hall (LL27 0JH, SH781631)

River Deep, Mountain High

Friday 17th May, 2019

River Deep, Mountain High

This walk explores both low and high places; we ought really to call it ‘Mountain High, River Deep’, as we visit the higher places first. We start by ascending Grinllwm, the hill which directly overlooks Trefriw and offers splendid views down the Conwy valley to the coast. We then head to the trig point at one of the highest parts of the Gwydir Forest before descending to  Gwydir to walk beside the river Conwy back to Trefriw, almost at sea level (the river is tidal to Tan Lan, between Trefriw and Llanrwst).

Duration:  All Day. Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance:  about x miles / x km

Grade:  Moderate (though a steep start), and at a leisurely pace

Meet:  x.xx a.m. at Trefriw Village Hall (LL27 0JH, SH781631)

Views from the High Gwydir

Friday 17th May, 2019

Views from the High Gwydir

This is a great scenic walk in the higher parts of the edge of the Gwydir Forest, with some lovely open views over the surrounding valleys and over to the mountains of northern Snowdonia.

We’ll go by minibus to Gwydir Uchaf (just 2 miles from Trefriw), then the route heads up to Llyn Parc, with elevated views over the Conwy valley, then over to Nant Bwlch-yr-haearn, from where it’s possible (in good visibility) to spot nine 3000′ peaks. We pass Llyn Bwlch y Gwynt and Llyn Glangors, each offering their own views over to the mountains, then back to Trefriw via Llyn Geirionydd and above the Crafnant valley.

Pace and Paddle

Friday 17th May, 2019

Pace and Paddle

A walk with a difference!  We’ll be doing some good walking between Trefriw and Llyn Parc (in the Gwydir Forest), and also a 2-hour pack-rafting session on the lake. Pack-rafting is where you carry your light, raft with you, then inflate it when you get to the water. The two hours includes the walk to the lake, so we will have about an hour on the water. Life jackets will be provided.

  (pictures from ‘Tirio’)

There will be two groups of 8 people:

  •  The first group will go by our minibus to Hafna Mine, then walk up to Llyn Parc (1 or 2 miles) for the pack-rafting session. Afterwards they will walk back to Hafna Mine for lunch, then back to Trefriw (5 or 6 miles).
  • The second group will walk from Trefriw to Hafna MIne to join the first group for lunch, then on up to Llyn Parc (a total of 5 or 6 miles) for the pack-rafting session, then return to Hafna Mine (1 or 2 miles) to catch our minibus back to Trefriw.

Duration:  All Day. Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance:  about 6 – 8 miles / x km of walking    (6 if we use this end of Llyn Parc, 8 if the other), plus a session on the water.

Grade:  Moderate, and at a leisurely pace

Meet:  x.xx a.m. at Trefriw Village Hall (LL27 0JH, SH781631)
