Two Cake Walks

Two Cake Walks: the choice is yours

Stroll along Gower Road to the suspension bridge over the River Conwy and back, in time for ‘The Cake Fest’. This walk route is suitable for pushchairs, wheelchairs and mobility scooters.
If it is dry underfoot, there is the possibility of an alternative easy walk (involving some gates, but otherwise flat ground) around The Cob to look at the new wildlife area and the remains of the old Trefriw Wharf.
There will be the opportunity, on both walks, to discover the influence of the river on the colourful history of the village from local residents.

You will get back in time for our now-legendary Cake Fest at 4 p.m.!

Duration:  Afternoon 1 – 2 hr strolling at a leisurely pace

From Betws-y-coed to Trefriw – 2017

From Betws-y-coed to Trefriw

We will initially travel up the Conwy Valley from Trefriw to Betws-y-coed by public transport (bus), to then start the walk back to Trefriw along a high level route through the Gwydir High Park. This is a gem of a walk, with excellent views of the surrounding hills and Snowdonia Ranges, visiting the lakes and historical sites along the route.

Duration:  6 hours.    Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance:  11 km / 7 miles

Grade:  Moderate

Suitability:  Anyone who is reasonably fit

Early Bird Walk – 2017

Early Bird Walk

Enjoy the dawn chorus on an early morning walk in and around the edges of the Gwydir Forest with some local bird watchers. Whilst walking a loop that includes woodland and riverbank, learn how to identify birds by their song. A leisurely pace with some rough and short steep sections. The ground may be wet in places. Good boots and binoculars recommended.

Duration:  Early morning, 2.5 hours.

Distance:  5 km / 3 miles

Grade:  Moderate

The Legends Trail – 2017

The Legends Trail

Be the first people ever to walk the new Trefriw Legends Trail, launched at the Walking Festival as part of the Year of Legends in Wales.  The route takes in Llanrwst, Gwydir, Llanrhychwyn, Llyn Geirionydd and Llyn Crafnant.

The trail is designed to be a self-guided walk, so that’s exactly what it will be!  You will be your own leaders! The complimentary laminated trail guide contains a map, good directions, and many legend snippets.  (The guide also indicates where the route can be shortened for an earlier return, if desired.)

(p.s.  Don’t spread this around, but going on this walk will put you in a very strong position if you wish to enter our Legends Quiz, running over all 3 days, the winner of which will win a copy of the new Legends Book on the Sunday at the Cake Fest.)

Duration:  All Day – 5 hours.   Please bring a packed lunch.

Old Tramways in the Carneddau Foothills – 2017

Old Tramways in the Carneddau foothills

We will initially be travelling by minibus up the steep hill from Trefriw to the Cowlyd Valley.  From there we will walk for 1.5 miles over the spur of Moel Eilio to remote Cwm Eigiau, to then leisurely walk the length of the Eigiau Tramway and the Cowlyd Tramway (a total of 4.5 miles), back to our start point.  We will then return to Trefriw on foot on the lane.

There will be plenty of local history regarding these tramways and the dams they served.

This area of the Carneddau foothills is remote.  Please ensure that you have warm, waterproof clothing and good boots.

Duration:  All Day –  6 hours.    Please bring a packed lunch.

Grade:  Moderate/hard

2017 is the Year of Legends in Wales.  This is a leisurely walk through the woods above the Crafnant valley up to Llyn Geirionydd (and back), site of the Taliesin memorial. We will be joined by professional storyteller Fiona Collins (author of ‘Folktales of North Wales for Children‘ and other similar titles) who will be storytelling.

Learn a Legend Rap!

NOTE – THIS IS NOT A WALK.

2017 is the Year of Legends in Wales.  Professional poet/musician Martin Daws will be taking a local legend and developing it into a rap!  (Martin was Young People’s Laureate Wales 2013 – 2016.)

The target audience for this session is adults.  (There is a session on Saturday aimed at families.)

A recording of the finished rap will be played at the Cake Fest on Sunday at 4 p.m.!

A 45-minute slow meditative walk from Gwydir Uchaf Chapel (2 miles from Trefriw), along the undulating Lady Mary Walk on the edge of Gwydir Forest.  There will be a short session of yoga/meditation before and after the walk.

As part of the Snowdonia Society‘s 50th anniversary celebrations, we have teamed up with them to present this walk:

This will be a leisurely walk around the garden and woodland grounds at Tŷ Hyll (The Ugly House) with the opportunity to hear about the history and legends of this remarkable building and the plants that are found in its grounds, including the important role of The Snowdonia Society in securing its future as a place to showcase plants for pollinators, and other educational and conservation activities.

Duration:  Approx. 3 hours, including free time to enjoy the garden or buy tea & cake!

A High Mountain Walk in the Carneddau – 2017

The Eigiau Horseshoe – A High Mountain Walk in the Carneddau

As part of the Snowdonia Society‘s 50th anniversary celebrations, we have teamed up with them to present this walk:

This challenging mountain walk, often called the Eigiau Horseshoe, will start and finish from the car park in Cwm Eigiau (we’ll get you there by minibus) to then take in the peaks of Foel Grach and Carnedd Llewelyn (both 3000’ers), plus Pen Yr Helgi Du and Pen Llithrig y Wrach.

The route does not always follow obvious paths.  Note too that some sections are exposed, and in a couple of places hands will be needed.

The walk entails a total of some 3500’ (1100m) of ascent, and will offer some great views, if the cloud is high; but please note that the route will likely be altered or shortened if weather conditions are not favourable.

Full water/windproofs, warm clothing, and good mountain boots are essential.

Duration:   All day,  8 hrs walking.   Please bring a packed lunch.

Distance:   15 km/ 10 miles

Grade:    Strenuous high mountain

Suitability:    Fit experienced walkers

Ten Lakes – 2017

Ten Lakes

Back by popular demand, this is our longest walk – a full day from Trefriw into the Gwydir Forest, visiting 10 of the area’s hidden lakes.

Starting and finishing with the largest and best-known lakes in the area – Geirionydd and Crafnant – this long round from Trefriw will visit a total of 10 lakes in the Gwydir Forest, many with history linked to local metal-mining.  Much of the walk is in the upper, elevated part of the forest, offering excellent views of the mountains, The pace will be easy, and uses a lot of good forest tracks, but is rated as moderate/strenuous simply by virtue of its length. We will be passing toilets at 2½ miles, 10½ miles and 12½ miles.

Duration:  All day 7-8 hrs walking.    Please bring a packed lunch.

The Owl of Cwm Cowlyd

A minibus will take us to Capel Curig, from where we will walk back to Trefriw via remote Cwm Cowlyd, home of The Mabinogion‘s wise Owl of Cwm Cowlyd, and other legends and folklore.

This walk ‘among the mountains’ offers some good views of the Glyders and the Carneddau.  After walking much of the length of the valley, the return to Trefriw will be via Rhibo and Coed Creigiau.

Duration:  All day –  5 hrs walking.    Please bring a packed lunch.

A Walk in Nature for Families 

This is a family activity walk which will combine environmental games and activities with learning more about the area’s myths and legends and its human and natural history.  We will walk from Trefriw up into the in the beautiful bluebell-filled fields and woods of the Crafnant valley, where amongst many other things we will go on minibeast safaris and scavenger hunts, have a little forage for wild food and just enjoy ourselves.

The walk will not be strenuous but will at times be away from paths and tracks so suitable footwear is required.

The Princess’ Trail to Llanrhychwyn – 2017

Llywelyn Legends

2017 is the Year of Legends in Wales.

From Trefriw we will walk up the steep lane to Llanrhychwyn Church (variously reputed to be the oldest and tiniest in Wales), just as Llywelyn and Joan, his wife, had to do before he built the church in Trefriw for her – you’ll appreciate why he did that!  We return along a different scenic path down through Cwmannog woods, to finish with a visit to St Mary’s Church in Trefriw (‘Llywelyn’s Church’), with its stained-glass window of Llywelyn and Joan.

The two churches of Trefriw and Llanrhychwyn are part of the Rural Conwy Sacred Doors Trail.

We will be joined by professional storyteller Fiona Collins (author of ‘Folktales of North Wales for Children‘ and other similar titles) who will be storytelling about Llywelyn.

This event is aimed at families (children should be 8+).

Duration:   3 hours.     Please bring a packed lunch.

Trefriw’s Classic Two Lake Walk – 2017

Trefriw’s Classic Two Lake Walk

Join us for the walk that attracts many visitors to Trefriw– the classic tour of Llyn Crafnant and Llyn Geirionydd. From the centre of Trefriw, we ascend past the falls and onto the edge of Gwydyr forest. Gwdydr Forest was mentioned in written texts at least 500 years ago, and we’ll certainly witness some of its history, passing abandoned mine works and the monument to the bard, Taliesin.

The views from both lakes are stunning and there will be plenty of opportunity to talk to your guides about the history and legends of the area. After completing our loop of the two lakes we’ll head back to the Trefriw. If the seasons are kind to us, we’ll take in the vast and stunning field of bluebells as we return to the village.

Duration:  4 hrs.

A walk from Trefriw over to Siabod café in Capel Curig, via the tops of Creigiau Gleision, Craig Wen and Crimpiau, whose skyline form ‘The Sleeping Lady’.   This elevated area offers some great views of the mountains of Snowdonia.

A minibus will bring us back to Trefriw in time for the Cake Fest at 4 p.m.!

Developing Navigation Skills

After a brief introduction to navigation skills, we’ll be walking up to Llyn Geirionydd, over the hill, through the forest, and down to renowned Llyn Crafnant. Along the way the participants will get to practise their new found navigation skills.  We’ll return to Trefriw via the old mine workings at Klondyke in time for the Cake Fest.

Participants will require the OS 1:25000 OL17 map of the area, and a compass.

Duration:  All day – 6 hrs    Please bring a packed lunch.
